The Impala purrs into the farm, barely making a sound. It's easily the best-running of any of the vehicles there - since Sam's Porsche isn't here, anyway.

Dean stays in the drivers' seat for a moment or two before getting out, shoving his hands into his pockets and striding out for the kitchen. That's the only reason he's here.

Because she knows someone has to know how to maintain it. Thye have so many smart people around.

"No kiddin'." Dean believes it. The combined smarts of the people on the farm intimidates him sometimes - part of the reason for the demeaning nickname, if he'd admit it. "Yeah, that's easy t'do."

He cracks his beer open in a VERY MANLY FASHIO)N with his hands, and offers one large, calloused hand for hers too, eyebrow raised.

Mel, who has pulled the top of hers without even acknowledging it should be a hard thing to do, glances at the hand in surprise.

"What, you want both?"

Dean glances at hers and shakes his head, grinning. "Was gonna open it for you," he admits, and lifts his own to his lips.

Mmmmm nothing like a cold beer in the afternoons. Happy Dean!

"Just to, y'know, prove that I'm gentlemanly and stuff. I can be gentlemanly."

Aw, lookit him trying to be manly. Mel smirks as she takes her own.

"I'm stronger'n you."

"Ah, rub it in, why doncha," Dean complains, but he's smirking, a little bit sheepish still. "I swear, this world's full'a people stronger'n me. It's a conspiracy."

Thoughtful: "How much stronger?"

(He's never had sex with someone stronger than him. The thought is ... not distasteful.)

She's really not used to questions like that, and raises an eyebrow.

"Dunno."

It's true; she doesn't know how strong he is! "But I think the only person here stronger'n me's Clark."

"Haven't met him." Dean loses interest - in Clark, anyway. "Must be useful?"

"Yeah," she agrees. "I get the heavy lifting done around the farm. And I can protect my girls."

It's great for fighting.

"So fun for everyone else too?" Amused Dean is amused. "You do all the heavy lifting?"

"Only the fun parts," Mel counters. She's not stupid.

Dean grins, getting up to come stand by her rather than leave all that space between them. "That sounds like the kinda plan I could get behind. Y'know, assumin' I was the super-strong heavy-liftin' type in the first place."

Yeah, thing about him standing?

Mel is, in comparison, really tiny. She could pick Dean up in one hand, but he could probably return it.

"Smart thinking. People don't think I can manage it."

It makes Dean grin. She's tiny! And could still kick his ass. And probably not die or faint if a monster attacked.

"I'm sure they learn quick," he points out, leaning against the table to be a little nearer her height.

Then Mel wouldn't be special. And it'd make her sad.

"Yeah, I'm really not good at pretending to be useless."

Hell, she's no good at admitting when she's useless.

Dean regards her thoughtfully. "I kinda like that."

"Well, I do it to get you to like me."

Sarcasm is well intentioned, honestly!

"You gotta use a lot of smarts doing your job too, right?"

Dean laughs. "Nah, you can do it just as good being thick as a freakin' brick. I just put up a good front."

OK, that laughter is joined.

"I figure being dumb'd get you killed pretty quickly."

She knows it almost got her killed. It DID get Zuko killed.

"Natural selection," Dean agrees cheerfully. "Miracle I'm still alive, really. I guess Darwin ain't all he's cut out t'be."

Blank look which immediately becomes shifty.

"Now's when I turn out to be just as dumb as I look."

"Or just as from-a-different-world," Dean remarks, unfazed. "Speaking of which, where are you from? Much like here?"

"Jesu, no." Mel says quickly. "I'm a city girl, from up in Noram - East Coast. Via two post-apoc wastelands to get here."

Dean nods as if this is perfectly normal. Hell, for all he knows, it is. "You're doin' damn well running a farm for a city chick. Not that I'd know anythin' about it."
